What Is an OPTOS Retinal Exam?

An OPTOS retinal exam uses optomap® imaging to capture a detailed, wide-field image of the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of your eye.

Retinal imaging gives your optometrist additional information about structures that play an important role in your vision and eye health. Your images can also be documented as part of your eye health record and compared over time when appropriate.

MORE INFORMATION IN A SINGLE IMAGE

Why Retinal Imaging Matters

Some retinal and optic nerve changes can occur without obvious symptoms in their early stages. A detailed view of the back of the eye can help your optometrist evaluate your retinal health and determine whether further testing or monitoring is appropriate.

OPTOS imaging may provide useful information when evaluating or monitoring concerns associated with conditions such as:

  • Diabetic eye disease
  • Macular degeneration
  • Glaucoma
  • Retinal tears or other retinal changes

Retinal imaging is one part of a comprehensive evaluation and does not replace the other testing your optometrist may recommend.

FAST, SIMPLE & NONINVASIVE

What to Expect During OPTOS Retinal Imaging

The imaging process takes only a short time. You look into the OPTOS device one eye at a time while the system captures an image of your retina.

The image is available immediately, giving your optometrist an opportunity to examine it and show you what they see. When images are retained in your record, they can also provide a useful reference for monitoring changes at future visits.

YOUR EYE HEALTH, MADE EASIER TO SEE

Review Your Retinal Images With Your Optometrist

One benefit of digital retinal imaging is the ability to see the image alongside your eye doctor.

Your optometrist can point out important retinal structures, explain relevant findings in clear language, and discuss whether your results indicate a need for routine monitoring, additional testing, or follow-up care.

TRACKING CHANGES OVER TIME

A Useful Record of Your Retinal Health

Your eyes can change gradually. Retinal images provide a visual record that may help our optometrists compare findings from one visit to another.

When appropriate, this can support ongoing monitoring by making changes in the appearance of the retina easier to document and evaluate over time.
