CLEAR VISION WHILE YOU’RE AWAKE
Ortho-K Contact Lenses in Huntington Beach
Orthokeratology, commonly called ortho-k, uses specially designed contact lenses worn overnight to temporarily reshape the cornea. After removing the lenses in the morning, many patients can see clearly during the day without wearing glasses or daytime contact lenses.
At ortho-k is also one of the options that may be considered as part of myopia management for children with progressive nearsightedness.
What Is Ortho-K?
Ortho-k lenses are custom rigid gas-permeable contact lenses designed to gently change the shape of the cornea while you sleep. This temporary change alters how light focuses in the eye. The lenses are removed after waking, allowing appropriate patients to go through much or all of their day without their usual glasses or contact lenses.
Because the effect is temporary, the lenses need to be worn as directed to maintain the vision correction.
AN OPTION FOR GROWING EYES
Ortho-K for Myopia Management
For children with progressive myopia, ortho-k can serve two purposes: correcting nearsightedness during the day and helping slow myopia progression over time.
Ortho-K is not a cure for myopia and cannot guarantee that progression will stop. Our optometrists evaluate your child’s prescription, eye health, corneal shape, and other factors to determine whether it may be an appropriate myopia management option.
CUSTOMIZED TO THE SHAPE OF YOUR EYES
How Ortho-K Lenses Are Fitted
A successful ortho-k fit begins with detailed measurements. Corneal mapping creates a precise picture of the shape and curvature of your cornea. Our optometrists use these measurements, along with your prescription and eye health findings, to select and refine your customized lenses.
Follow-up visits allow us to check your vision, examine the health of your eyes, and make adjustments when needed.
FROM YOUR FIRST NIGHT TO YOUR FOLLOW-UPS
What to Expect With Ortho-K
Your vision usually changes gradually after you begin wearing ortho-k lenses. Some patients notice improvement quickly, while reaching a stable result can take additional time depending on the prescription and individual response.
Regular follow-up is an important part of ortho-k care. We monitor your vision, lens fit, corneal health, and treatment response throughout the process.
You will also receive instructions for inserting, removing, cleaning, and storing your lenses properly.
GOOD LENS HABITS MATTER
Ortho-K Safety & Lens Care
Ortho-K lenses are worn while sleeping, so careful hygiene and follow-up care are essential.
Always follow the wearing and cleaning instructions provided by your optometrist. Do not use tap water on your lenses or lens case, and contact our office promptly if you develop unusual redness, pain, discharge, light sensitivity, or a sudden change in vision.
Our team will explain safe lens handling before you begin treatment.
IS ORTHO-K RIGHT FOR YOU?
Who May Be a Candidate for Ortho-K?
Ortho-K may be considered for children undergoing myopia management as well as some adults who would like less dependence on daytime glasses or contact lenses.
Whether it is appropriate depends on factors including your prescription, corneal shape, eye health, expectations, and ability to follow the required lens-care routine.
A comprehensive evaluation is the best way to determine whether your eyes are suitable.
LESS TO MANAGE WHILE YOU’RE IN THE GAME
Ortho-K for Athletes & Active Lifestyles
Glasses and daytime contact lenses are not always convenient during sports. For appropriate ortho-k patients, removing the lenses in the morning can provide clear daytime vision without having to wear corrective lenses during many activities.
That can be particularly appealing for athletes involved in running, field and court sports, or other activities where glasses may feel restrictive or daytime contacts may be inconvenient.
Ortho-K suitability still depends on your prescription, corneal shape, eye health, and individual needs. Our optometrists can determine whether it is a practical option for your sport and lifestyle.
